SBEF Supports Teacher Training in Early Literacy

Last school year, we provided funding for 28 of our elementary school teachers to begin the two-year LETRS early literacy training program. Grounded in the “science of reading,” the LETRS program provides educators with research-based insights into how children learn to read and how to best support their literacy development. San Bruno teachers, like Ms. Murphy and Mrs. Easley quoted below, have found this literacy program so effective that SBEF is excited to support more teachers in attending the training this school year.

“The LETRS  training is far superior to any teacher training course or professional development I have ever attended,” said Ms. Murphy, long-time 1st grade teacher at John Muir. “The information presented is detailed, relevant, and easy to implement on a daily basis. The students are benefiting from the explicit phonics instruction.”

Mrs. Easley, a veteran 2nd grade teacher at John Muir agrees: “The LETRS training has given me a solid foundation of strategies for teaching reading in alignment with the Science of Reading. This latest research-based approach includes explicit and direct instruction in all areas of reading instruction including phonics, word study, and spelling for the second grade level.”

SBEF is thrilled that we can support our teachers in learning the latest in innovative literacy instruction, which then, in turn, improves our students’ literacy skills.
