Question 2: Why do we need education foundations? Don’t our expensive property taxes pay for our schools?
Answer: There is a common misconception that State and local property taxes provide enough funding for an exceptional education. Unfortunately, this is not the case.
California actually spends $1,000 less per student than the national average.
Proposition 13 drastically altered the amount of property taxes available to public schools, leaving massive financial gaps in funding. Funding provided by PTAs (Parent Teacher Associations) and local education foundations helps to bridge those gaps.
Many cities have education foundations to support their local school districts. State and local property taxes pay for the basics of mandatory curriculum, while education foundations fund academic enrichment programs including music, art, STEM and professional development for teachers.
