Want To Participate In The 2025 County STEM Fair?

SBEF is proud to support the District science fair again this year!

5th-8th graders are invited to a STEM Fair interest session this Fri. 10/18, 2024, at 3:15pm at Parkside or on Zoom.

This will be the third year that SBEF supports San Bruno Park School District students in participating in the San Mateo County STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Fair.

In the March 2024 STEM fair, three Parkside 6th graders took second place in their respective areas among other 6th graders across San Mateo County!

  • Oscar Kimmell in Behavioral Sciences for his project, “Does Music Improve Memory?”
  •  Xavier Ablang in Biological Systems for “Does A Certain pH Level in Soil Affect A Marigold’s Growth?”
  • Jayden Lam in Engineering & Technology for his “Germ-Free Candle Extinguisher” design.

For the 2024 STEM fair, fourteen 5th-8th graders conducted experiments or designed engineering projects and submitted them to the County STEM Fair for judging. District Student Services Coordinator Michelle Graham and Portola parent Michelle Toft Graham led weekly workshops at Parkside to help students independently complete their STEM projects, teaching students the scientific method and engineering principles, as well as how to communicate their work to others. Michelle Toft Graham also connected many of the students with her colleagues at biotech firm Abbvie to mentor students on their projects individually. SBEF provided students with science experiment supplies, if needed.

Congratulations to our budding scientists, and we hope to see more young scientists participate in 2025’s STEM Fair!
